Am Untersee, im Strandabschnitt südöstlich das Wangener Horns, entdeckte der Landwirt Caspar Löhle 1856 prähistorische Objekte, die an kurz zuvor am Zürichsee gemachte Funde erinnerten. In der Folgezeit nahm Löhle Ausgrabungen vor und verkaufte Fundstücke an verschiedene Sammlungen, darunter auch nach Karlsruhe. Löhle (1799-1878) gilt zu Recht als Entdecker der Feuchtbodensiedlungen am Bodensee. Durch das Landesdenkmalamt Baden-Württemberg seit den 1980er Jahren durchgeführte Sondagen haben gezeigt, dass der Fundplatz mit Unterbrechungen im Lauf der Pfyner- und der Horgener Kultur, d.h. vom 39.-36. Jh. v. Chr. und vom 33.-29. Jh. v. Chr. besiedelt war.

In 1856, at Lake Untersee, on the beach south-east of the “Wangener Horn”, the farmer Caspar Löhle discovered prehistoric objects similar to the ones which had previously been found at Lake Zurich. Löhle subsequently conducted excavations and sold finds to various collections, including Karlsruhe. Löhle (1799 – 1878) is rightly regarded as the discoverer of the pile dwellings at Lake Constance. Soundings conducted by the Baden-Württemberg Heritage Office since the 1980s have demonstrated that the site was intermittently occupied during the Pfyn- and Horgen Cultures from the 39th to the 36th century BC and again from the 33rd to the 29th century BC.
