P O Das römische Amphitheater von Arles wurde zwischen 90 und 100 n. Chr. auf einem Hügel erbaut. Es bestand ursprünglich aus drei Geschossen mit je 60 Arkaden und bot etwa 25.000 Zuschauern Platz. - Als Amphitheater wurde in der Antike ein Gebäude bezeichnet, bei dem um den Ort einer Vorführung herum Zuschauerränge errichtet worden waren. So galt die Bezeichnung zunächst auch für den Circus. Später bezog sie sich nur noch auf den Ort der Gladiatorenkämpfe.
